Christine Maughan

Meet Christine Maughan, Deaf Youth Program Coordinator

My name is Christine Maughan, and I am honored to introduce myself as the new Deaf Youth Program Coordinator at the Sally J. Pimentel Deaf & Hard of Hearing Center. I am excited to join this vibrant community and to work alongside you in supporting the growth and success of our deaf youth.

I am the proud mother of four grown sons, with my oldest son being deaf. My personal journey as a parent has given me deep insight into the experiences and needs of deaf youth and their families. Professionally, I hold a Nursing degree as well as Master's degrees in Special Education and Educational Leadership. Since 1988, I have been immersed in the deaf community, beginning my work on the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf campus, which housed the Pressley Ridge School for Deaf students. There, I had the privilege of serving students who were both deaf and autistic — an experienced that sparked my lifelong devotion to supporting individuals with autism. I was an adjunct professor at a Community College teaching ASL I and ASL II. Now, through DHHC, I will be teaching a sign language class offered in January 2026 to non-verbal individuals and their families in effort to support additional means of communication.

At the DHHC, we are committed to providing valuable resources and services that empower deaf and hard of hearing individuals. Our youth program is designed to foster confidence, leadership, and connection through educational activities, social opportunities, and skill-building experiences. I believe that collaboration with families is essential, and I look forward to building strong partnerships with you to ensure each child thrives.

In the coming weeks, I will be sharing more information about upcoming events, workshops, and opportunities for your child to engage with peers and mentors. I also welcome your input and ideas — your voice is vital in shaping a program that truly meets the needs of our youth.

Thank you for welcoming me into this community. I am eager to begin this journey together and to celebrate the achievements of our young people.
