The Deaf & Hard of Hearing Center is an advocate for deaf, hard of hearing, late deafened, deaf-blind and related individuals to request and ensure the provision of appropriate accommodations.
We provide general information and workshops related to Americans with Disabilities Act (A.D.A.), the Individuals with Disabilities Act (I.D.E.A.) and Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
For persons who may have been denied accessibility to effective communication, we provide information regarding the complaint process and other avenues of recourse.
An ongoing effort to create community awareness regarding deaf and hard of hearing residents is accomplished through presentations to civic clubs, neighborhood and professional associations, businesses, churches, schools and participation in health fairs.
Generously funded by the Cape Coral Community Foundation, the Breaking the Barrier Program is a multi-faceted program designed to assist Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals with "breaking the barriers" to gaining employment. The total approach program includes essential components such as educational workshops and one on one job coaching, mock interviews, outreach and educational presentations to the business community on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and compliance with the law, understanding of Deaf Culture from a business perspective, best ways to communicate with a deaf person, benefits to hiring a Deaf person, and provision of a free interpreter for the interview.
Generously funded by the Southwest Florida Community Foundation, Project Sign the City
is a program committed to helping improve communication with businesses and the Deaf and Hard of Hearing citizens they serve. Our agency will come to your place of business for one hour, provide lunch for up to 20 people, bring 2 American Sign Language teachers, and teach you and your staff basic key phrases in sign language that are pertinent to your business. Communication with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is essential for care providers, first responders, law enforcement, medical, legal, financial institutions and all other businesses. Schedule your Lunch and Learn today by emailing Amy Turner, Executive Director - amyturner@dhhc.life
